Whitethorn Construction is certified
by Smartwood's regional representative, the Institute for Sustainable Forestry, to maintain
chain-of-custody documentation on wood products derived from certified sustainable forest
management practices. Smartwood is a program of the Rainforest Alliance. According to the
Smartwood website certification:
- Ensures that timber harvesting is ecologically sound, and socially
and economically beneficial to local communities.
- Creates market incentives for producers to responsibly manage forests
and harvest timber.
- Gives consumers the power to positively "vote" for
conservation when they buy certified wood products.
- Contributes to the preservation of forests and forest wildlife
worldwide.
Customers want to know that wood they purchase comes from forests
managed on a sustainable basis. To provide that assurance businesses involved in
harvesting, processing, distributing, and retailing certified wood products must track
each unit of certified material as it passes through the "chain of custody."
Whitethorn Hardwoods has established materials handling
procedures that adhere to Smartwood's chain-of-custody
guidelines.
